Three Types of Replacement Windows - Wood, Vinyl, and Aluminum

Replacement windows are usually framed with one of three different materials: wood, vinyl, or aluminum. Each has benefits and downsides. So how do you decide which material will work best for the replacement windows in your home? Read on to learn more.

Wood is the most popular type of material used in replacements. It has been used to frame windows for centuries. Many people choose it simply because it gives homes an attractive, classic look that is hard to duplicate with other materials.

As for actual efficiency and practicality, however, wood may leave something to be desired. It doesn't take much for cracks and leaks to appear in the framing, and over time the wood may be subject to rotting or warping. It requires frequent maintenance with fresh applications of paint.

Vinyl is another type of replacement window material that is quickly growing in popularity. Vinyl is inexpensive, easy to install, and requires very little maintenance. It offers energy efficiency, as it prevents heat and cold from passing through its frame. The vinyl will not warp or crack over time, and it does not need to be painted.

There are a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes of vinyl windows to choose from. Many people enjoy the modern practicality of using vinyl windows, but some dislike it because it lacks the personality and class of wooden frames.

Our last option is aluminum replacement windows. Aluminum is great for commercial buildings, as the material is strong and powerful. However, aluminum windows are not particularly nice to look at, so you may find that they don't conform to the design and look of your home. They are also not very energy efficient, as heat passes through the material easily. On the plus side, they are less expensive and require less maintenance than wood-frame windows.
